Do we really need an Ombudsman organization?

Certainly Anna Hazare is an icon of the angst being felt by every Indian. Kudos to “Team Anna” for making the Indian government writhe. But the question we need to ask ourselves is “Will the deeply rooted corruption wane just by creating a new ombudsman organization or by increasing the scope of existing anticorruption ombudsman organization? In line with an anonymous quote: “Egg broken from outside is death while broken from inside is birth”, for every individual the thought to create corrupt free India must come from within and not be imposed by an organization. It should be an ethical responsibility of every individual to lead a corrupt free life. If there is a “to” there is a “from” and likewise if there is a “recipient” there must be a “giver”. It is time for some serious united action from the givers (bribers). The phrase “united action” needs to be emphasized because a few good souls here and there resisting corruption will not address the problem. I hereby put forth the following agenda for all the Indians:

1. New driving license seekers should refuse to pay anything more than the application fee.

2. Newly married couples should refuse to pay anything more than the application fee to obtain their marriage certificate.

3. No bribe should be given to obtain birth and death certificates.

4. Homeowners should not succumb to the government officials’ tactic of getting money upfront and reducing the yearly property tax.

5. Travelers should not pay bribe to upgrade or procure additional ticket in buses or trains.

6. Parents should not pay any capital fee for schools or colleges. Management fee is also bribery and in most cases it goes to politicians who run these institutions.

7. Government job seekers should not pay money or take shortcuts to get the government jobs.

8. No household should pay extra money to get their monthly government allocated ration supplies.

9. No one should pay extra money for medical supplies and treatments at government hospitals.

10. File the yearly income tax in an accurate and timely manner.

The above steps will at least pave a way to eliminate corruption at the level of common people who are the roots of the society. If the root is disease free, the tree will yield better fruits, provided it is watered well.

Books read until 2010

Even though my dad tried to get me to reading books when i was in school, books never interested me. Obviously I didn't read any books during my engineering studies in Chennai, India. It didn't even start during the couple of years in graduate school. Finally after landing in a job in 2005 and not knowing to know what to do in the evenings and weekends and thanks to Barnes and Noble, books became my friends. I read quite a bit ( to my standards) and then again slowed down and again a phase of avid book reading. Till today it is kind of a sinusoidal curve. Anyways in this post I like to list the books I have read in my life until 2010. This posting is not to show off what I have read but only as a record for my future reference.

I dont have the innate ability to write reviews for books. After 4 years

This week finally I had time to read a book and that was " Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. Has been sitting in the book shelf for the last 4 years. Aphorisms by Morrie are eye openers. I could sense teachings borrowed from some Hindu Scriptures but it could be in other religions and cultures too or may be even from Morrie's own experience.

Nonetheless lessons by Morrie are more practical. The one that is on top of my mind is " When you learn how to die you learn how to live". My another favorite is on the Tension of Opposites " Life is a series of pulls back and forth. You want to do one thing but you are bound to do something else". So simple and common it sounds at first glance, but if you ponder over, you will realize the importance of this statement.

A must read for everyone in my opinion.

So let me see how far I can continue my reading and blogging from now on.

ந‌டை

நியுஜெர்சியில் ப்ரின்ஸ்டன் சிட்டிக்கும் ஓல்ட்ப்ரிட்ஜ் சிட்டிக்கும் உள்ள தூரம் இருபத்தைந்து மைல். வாரம் இருமுறை தவறாமல் ரிஷியை பார்த்தாக வேண்டும் ராகுலுக்கு. செல்வதற்கு முன் ‍ஃபோன் செய்து வீட்டில் இருக்கிறார்களா என்று உறுதி செய்து விட்டு, நேராக ரவுட் 27ல் உள்ள ஹாட் ப்ரெட்ஸ் சென்று, ரிஷிக்கு பிடித்த பைனாப்பில் கேக் வாங்கிக் கொண்டு, ரிஷியுடன் ரிலாக்சாக நேரம் செலவிடுவதை எண்ணி உற்சாகத்தோடு செல்வான் ராகுல்.

ரம்யா அக்காவை ராகுலுக்கு சிறு வ‌ய‌திலிருந்தே ப‌ரிச்சிய‌ம். ந‌டுவில் பல வ‌ருட‌ங்க‌ள் நேர‌டி தொட‌ர்பு இல்லை. ராகுல் வேலை கிடைத்து நியுஜெர்சி வரும் பொழுது, ராகுலின் அம்மா ர‌ம்யாவின் அம்மாவை சென்னை ந‌ங்க‌ந‌ல்லூர் க‌டைத்தெருவில் ச‌ந்திக்க, நியுஜெர்சி தலைப்பு செய்தியாக, ரம்யா அக்காவின் நியுஜெர்சி நம்பர் ராகுலிடம் வந்தது.

ஒரு ஞாயிரன்று ராகுல் போன் செய்துவிட்டு ர‌ம்யா அக்கா வீட்டிற்கு சென்றான். ரம்யாவின் கணவ‌ர் பாலாஜியுடன் அறிமுகம் நடந்தது. மூன்று வய‌தான ரிஷி ஏதோ ப‌ல வ‌ருட பழக்க‌ம் போல் அன்போடு ப‌ழகினான்.
எல்லா குழ‌ந்தைகளும் இப்படித்தான் உடனடியாக பழகிவிடுவார்கள் என்று ராகுலால் அந்த அன்பை சாதாரணப்படுத்த முடிவில்லை.

அன்று முதலே ராகுலுக்கு ரிஷி ஸ்பெஷல். ரிஷியும் ராகுலை "ராகுல் மாமா" என்றோ "ராகுல் அண்ணா" என்றோ அழைக்கவில்லை. ராகுல் என்றே அழைத்து வந்தான். ராகுலுக்கு அது மிகவும் பிடித்திருந்தது. ஆனால் ரிஷியின் பெற்றோர்கள் அவனுக்கு மரியாதை பாடங்கள் புகட்ட வெகு விரைவிலேயே ராகுல் "ராகுல் அண்ணா"வாகி விட்டது. பாலாஜியை சார் என்றும்,ரம்யாவை அக்கா என்றும் ராகுல் அழைத்து வந்தான்.


செப்டெம்பர் மாதம். இலையுதிர் காலம். ரிஷியை சந்திக்க சென்றான் ராகுல். சார் அலுவலக‌த்திலிருந்து வரவில்லை.சிறிது நேரம் அக்காவுடன் பேசிவிட்டு ரிஷியுடன் வாக்கிங் சென்றான் ராகுல். வீட்டு வாச‌ல் ப‌டியை விட்டு இற‌ங்கிய‌வுட‌னே, எந்த திசை நோக்கி செல்ல‌வேண்டும் என்று ரிஷி முடிவு எடுத்தான். நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கையில், “ஐ ஆம் யுஅர் ய‌ங்க‌ர் ப்ர‌த‌ர்” (I am your younger brother) என்று சொன்னான் ரிஷி. அன்றைய வாக்கிங் முழுவ‌தும் ரிஷி ராகுலை பெய‌ரிட்டுத்தான் அழைத்தான்.


பாதை முழுக்க ஒரே இலைக‌ள், பல பல வண்ண‌ங்க‌ளில். காற்று சற்று பலமாக வீச இலைகள் இங்கும் அங்கும் பறக்க ஆரம்பித்தது. குதூகலத்தில் ரிஷியும் இங்கும் அங்கும் ஓட, ராகுலும் அவன் பின்னாலேயே ஓடி அவன் கையை பிடித்துக்கொண்டான். உபயோகமாக நேரத்தை கழிக்க எண்ணி ரிஷியிடம் ராகுல் கூறினான் “தேர் ஆர் ‍ஃ போர் சீசன்ஸ் இன் அ இயர் - வின்டர், ஸ்ப்ரிங், சம்மர், ‍ஃபால். நவ் இட் ஸ் ‍ஃபால் சீசன் பிகாஸ் லீவ்ஸ் ஆர் ‍ஃபாலிங் ஆன் தி க்ரவுன்ட்.” (There are four seasons in a year – Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Now it is fall season because leaves are falling on the ground.) சிறிது நேர‌ம் மெள‌ன‌ம் நில‌விய‌து. பிறகு ச‌ட்டென ராகுலிட‌ம் திரும்பி "ஐ நோ ச‌ம்திங். டுமாரொ ஆல் தீஸ் லீவ்ஸ் வில் ‍ஃ ப்ளை டு தெ ட்ரி அன்ட் ஸ்டிக் தேர்" (I know something. Tomorrow all these leaves will fly to the tree and stick there.) என்றான் ரிஷி.

ஸ்ப்ரிங் சீசனைத்தான் ரிஷி வ‌ர்ணிக்கிறான் என்று ராகுலுக்கு புரிந்த‌து. இந்த‌ இலைக‌ள் மடிந்து போன‌வை, வின்டர் முடிந்து ஸ்ப்ரிங் சீசனில் மரங்களில் புதிதாக‌ இலைக‌ள் துளிர் விடும் என்று சொல்ல‌ நினைத்தான் ராகுல். தன்னைச் சுற்றி இருப்பது, நடப்பது அனைத்தும் நிரந்தரம் என்று நினைக்கும் மூன்று வயது குழந்தையின் மனதில் அவநம்பிக்கையை பயிரிட விருப்பமில்லாமல், “தேர் யு கோ ரிஷி, யு காட் இட். இன் ஸ்ப்ரிங் ஆல் தீஸ் லீவ்ஸ் வில் கோ டு தெ ட்ரி” (There you go Rishi, you got it. In Spring all these leaves will be in the tree) என்று கூறினான். இருப‌து நிமிட‌ ந‌டைக்குப் பிறகு வீடு வந்து சேர்ந்தார்க‌ள் ரிஷியும் ராகுலும்.

அன்று த‌ன‌து வீட்டிற்கு செல்லும் பொழுது, ரிஷியுட‌ன் பேசிய‌தே ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்த‌து ராகுலின் ம‌ன‌தில். வேதங்களை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டோ அல்லது பொதுவான இந்திய‌ த‌த்துவிய‌லின் அடிப்படையிலோ , ஜ‌ன‌னம்‍- ம‌ர‌ண‌ம் என்ப‌து ஒரு சுழ‌லும் ச‌க்க‌ர‌மாக‌ க‌ருத‌ப்ப‌டுகிற‌து. இதே கோணத்தில் தீவிரமாக யோசித்துப் பார்க்கையில் ரிஷி கூறிய வார்த்தைகள் "டுமாரொ ஆல் தீஸ் லீவ்ஸ் வில் ‍ஃ ப்ளை டு தெ ட்ரி அன்ட் ஸ்டிக் தேர்" (“Tomorrow all these leaves will fly to the tree and stick there”.) முற்றிலும் ச‌ரியாக‌ப்ப‌ட்ட‌து.

Ethical and Humane perspective missing in Iraq war

In the last four years, almost everyday our ears are constantly being fed with news related to numerous deaths in Iraq। Leave the individuals with radical religious thoughts. Which country doesn’t have radicals? What did normal people do apart from having belief in their religion and love for their country? Why should pregnant women, infants, school kids die?

Quite soon after the start of Iraq war in 2003, we all came to know Iraq is not responsible for the 9/11 attacks। So we know that the super power has waged a war against a country with innocent people. Terrorists do the same thing – target innocent people. To me there exists no difference between the terrorist groups and the war president (and his cabinet). The former does the killing without revealing the plan and then boasts about it while the latter announces the plan with pseudo pride and does the massacre.

Let us forgive the war president for starting the war, by convincing ourselves that he didn’t evaluate the situation properly in 2003 before waging the war। Why is he not stopping the war NOW after seeing thousand of innocent Iraqis and American soldiers being killed for no reason? The war is no way leading to peace and democracy; in turn it is giving birth to sectarian violence which is a worst curse for any country. It will take centuries for a country to relieve itself out of sectarian violence. We all know this from several past histories. The war president being a republican opposes abortion in his country. But he doesn’t seem to get bothered when pregnant women get killed in Iraq. I am quite perplexed by the rationale behind his views and policies. But at least it is clear that the thoughts and actions of the president completely lack humane and moral perspective.

One might argue that war is inevitable and it has to be fought। Is there a better etiquette to wage a war? I couldn’t think of anything novel, but I like to present here some of the rules that were followed in Great Mahabharata war at Kurukshetra, India around 3137 BC.

Rules:
1. War should start only after sunrise.
2. War should stop at sunset.
3. Multiple soldiers cannot attack a lone soldier.
4. Anyone who surrenders should not be killed.
5. Anyone without a weapon should not be attacked.
6. ANYONE WHO DOES NOT PARTICIPATE IN A WAR SHALL NOT BE ATTACKED.
7. Women should not be attacked.
8. No weapons shall be misused.

Ideally I don’t want a war to happen but if a war has to be waged, I would like to see all the above rules implemented. The countries in war could choose a battle ground and fight to resolve the problem following the above rules. All the above rules are strongly based on pure ethical and humane grounds. Guess most of us, particularly the war leaders may have to refer a dictionary for the two words “Ethical and Humane”. We could have avoided a great people loss in Iraq if the war leaders have at least followed the rule # 6.

விபச்சாரம்

மழை மேகங்களை விழுங்க அடர்த்தியாய் புறப்படும் புகை மேகங்கள்;

சாக்கடை கழிவுநீரின் தாழ்வு மனோபவத்தை அகற்ற போட்டியிடும் நதிகள்;

சிவ‌ப்பு நிற‌ உமிழ‌ங்க‌ளுக்கு ப‌ழ‌கி வ‌ர்ண‌பூசுக‌ளை நிராக‌ரிக்கும் க‌ட்டிங்க‌ள்;

இந்நிலைக்கும் த‌ன‌க்கும் ச‌ம்ப‌ந்த‌மில்லையென‌ வாழும் அல‌ட்சிய‌ ம‌னித‌ர்க‌ள்!

An afternoon walk -

On a day not too hot,not too cold,
